Three manner battle for all-rounder in group, Krunal Pandya emerges new contender

Krunal Pandya had final performed a T20I for India in July of 2021, in opposition to Sri Lanka, and since then has been out of the group.

There are a few players from the Indian team, who got limited opportunities in the national side, impressed, and yet were ousted for one reason or the other. Krunal Pandya is one of the those unfortunate all-rounders, who certainly deserved to be at least in the T20I side for a longer duration, but was done away with quite early.

Krunal Pandya Impressive for RCB in IPL 2025

But all might not be over for him already. The southpaw had a stellar season in the IPL 2025 — not only won the maiden trophy for RCB, but played a key role for the team, with the bat, and the ball. And hence, it could just be his time to make a grand entry into the Indian team once again.

The Asia Cup 2025 is just a month away, and the squad could be announced soon. And that could end Krunal Pandya’s three-year exile from the side. So, why does he deserve a chance, for starters? In the IPL this year, he batted in the lower-order, scored a fifty, and went on to bag 17 wickets in 15 matches, where his economy was only 8.

Riyan Parag’s Bowling Questionable

For those of you who didn’t follow the tournament, Krunal bowled lines which were just difficult to hit, coming up with speedy bouncers here and there. That made him the perfect bowler for the middle-overs. That said, he could face some stiff competition with the likes of Riyan Parag and Washington Sundar.

Washington Sundar Reliable Choice

Let’s analyze these two contenders as well. Parag scored 393 runs at an average of 32.75, while just three wickets came his way. So, as an all-rounder, he might not be the best pick. As for Washi, he is one of the best India has right now. His overall economy in 155 T20s is only 7, while with the bat he can be devastating, if he gets enough opportunities.

So, in a toss-up between Krunal and Washi, who should go ahead? Perhaps both. They both offer similar skillsets, but can be assets to the team. Playing them in the XI is different matter, but at least should be considered in the 15 for sure.
